7.2 and 7.8 are not “almost the same”
The pH scale is logarithmic, not linear. A change of 0.6 pH units represents about a fourfold change in hydrogen-ion concentration. That does not mean a pool at 7.8 is automatically unsafe or that 7.2 is always better. It means small-looking changes on the test scale can represent meaningful changes in the chemistry of the water.
For a homeowner, the practical takeaway is simple: pH should be managed as part of the whole water balance, not treated as a number that can drift indefinitely because it still “looks close.”
What changes as pH moves?

Water that is too far out of balance can contribute to eye or skin discomfort. Comfort also depends on other factors, including sanitizer level, combined chlorine, total dissolved material and contaminants, so pH is only one part of the picture.
Scale and surface conditions
Higher pH can contribute to conditions that favor calcium scale, especially when calcium hardness and alkalinity are also elevated. Lower pH can move water toward a more aggressive condition that may affect metal components, grout or other surfaces over time. Professionals therefore look at the complete balance, not pH in isolation.
Chlorine chemistry
In unstabilized water, pH affects the balance between hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion, two forms of free chlorine. In an outdoor pool with cyanuric acid (stabilizer), the relationship is more complex because much of the chlorine is temporarily bound to CYA. That is why a responsible service technician looks at pH, free chlorine and stabilizer together instead of making a decision from one reading.
Why South Florida pools can move quickly
Heat, heavy rain, intense sunlight, frequent use and chemical additions can all move water chemistry. Pools with salt chlorine generators may also experience a gradual upward pH trend. After storms or high bather load, a pool that was balanced earlier in the week may need attention sooner than expected.

Test consistently, use a reliable test method, and avoid chasing one number without considering the rest of the water. If pH repeatedly drifts, the better question is not only “what should I add?” but “why does this pool keep moving?” Alkalinity, aeration, sanitizer system, fill water and chemical habits may all be involved.
