A chlorine number is only one piece of the picture
Free chlorine is an important measurement, but water quality depends on more than whether a test shows “some chlorine.” A pool can have a measurable free-chlorine reading and still have cloudy water, algae pressure or poor sanitation performance if other conditions are working against the system.
Common reasons chlorine appears to be “not working”
Stabilizer is out of balance
Cyanuric acid helps protect chlorine from sunlight in outdoor pools, but it also changes chlorine chemistry. If stabilizer becomes excessive, managing the pool based only on a generic chlorine target can be misleading. Free chlorine and CYA should be considered together.
pH and overall water balance
pH affects chlorine chemistry and also influences comfort, scaling and corrosion tendencies. In stabilized outdoor pools, CYA significantly changes the chlorine relationship, so pH is important but should not be used as the only explanation for sanitizer performance.
There is a high contaminant demand
Leaves, sunscreen, sweat, organic debris, algae and other contaminants consume sanitizer. After heavy use or a storm, chlorine may be added but used quickly because the demand is high.
Circulation is poor
Sanitized water has to move through the pool. A clogged filter, blocked basket, valve problem, weak pump performance or poor run time can leave areas with inadequate circulation. Chemistry and hydraulics work together.
The test is incomplete or inaccurate
Old reagents, poor sampling technique, test strips stored badly or testing immediately after a chemical addition can produce misleading information. When the water does not match the test result, verify the test before making large adjustments.
What about combined chlorine?
Combined chlorine forms when chlorine reacts with nitrogen-containing contaminants. A pool can therefore show total chlorine while part of that reading is not free chlorine. Testing methods that distinguish free and combined chlorine provide more useful information than a total-only reading.
Look at the system as a whole
If a pool repeatedly loses chlorine or develops algae, investigate stabilizer, pH, circulation, filtration, sanitizer production or feed equipment, debris load and bather use. Solving the cause is more effective than treating the same symptom every week.
